Menthol Map
Since menthol is temperature dependent, timing of application is critical. The best time
to treat colonies for tracheal mites is in the fall of the year immediately after removing honey. Recent research
conducted at Penn State indicates that menthol applied early in the fall (early to mid September in central PA)
is far more effective than menthol applied later in the fall (after mid-October).
Our research has generated this fall menthol application map for Pennsylvania. To determine the latest date in
the fall when menthol can be effectively used in your area follow these directions:
1) First, find the location(s) of each apiary as closely as possible on the menthol map. You may need to consult
a road map of the area to determine the exact location.
2) Note the map color for each apiary location
3) Use the map color key to find the recommended autumn menthol application date for each apiary. If you apply
menthol on or before the recommended date, the menthol will adequately vaporize in all but abnormally cold years.
If menthol is applied after the recommended date, it is unlikely that you will receive a complete menthol treatment.
NOTE: An alternative treatment is to apply menthol in the spring when daytime temperatures reach 65 degrees F.
Treatments must be completed two weeks prior to a honey flow.
