Diagram of male and female tracheal mite

The honey bee tracheal mite is difficult to identify and study due to its small size; the female measures 143-174 microns long, the male 125-136 microns long (no bigger than a dust speck). The body is oval, widest between the second and third pairs of legs, whitish in color with a shining smooth cuticle. A few long, fine hairs are present on the body and legs. It has long, beak-like mouth parts for active feeding on the host.
