(Bicyclohexylammonium Fumagillin)
FUMIDIL B is a water-soluble form of the antibiotic fumagillin blended
with several agents which protect the fumagillin. The presence
of one of these protective agents makes it possible for the beekeeper
to use a portion of the bottle, replace the cap on the bottle,
and then safely store the remainder, so long as is kept in a dark
place. Avoid prolonged storage above 86 degrees F. In addition,
FUMIDILB contains buffering agents as further protection against
the possible adverse acidity or alkalinity of water likely to
be used in preparing medicated syrup.
INDICATIONS ...
For prevention of nosema in honey bees.
CONTRAINDICATIONS ...
The medicated syrup should not be fed during the honey flow or
immediately before the honey flow.
PRECAUTIONS ...
Colonies used for package production should be fed medicated syrup
as a principal food supply for a month prior to stocking nuclei
or shaking packages for market. Packages may be fed the medicated
syrup in transit, but such feeding alone is not sufficient to
protect against nosema. For the protection of overwintered colonies,
the syrup is preferable fed in the fall if it is fed only once.
There may be advantages to feeding the syrup in both the spring
and fall since such colonies are usually larger than those newly
established from packages; they require more syrup than package
colonies. Commonly, at least 2 gallons of medicated syrup per
colony are required.
HOW SUPPLIED ...
FUMIDIL B is available in three sizes: 0.5 g. (500 mg) fumagillin,
2.0 g. fumagillin, 9.5 g. fumagillin.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION...
9.5 grams to make 100 to 120 gallons of medicated syrup for feeding
100 to 120 package colonies or fall-feeding 50 to 60 wintering
colonies; 2.0 grams to make 20 to 24 gallons of syrup for feeding
20 to 24 package colonies or fall-feeding 10 to 12 wintering colonies;
0.5 gram of the product is sufficient to medicate 5 to 6 gallons
of syrup for feeding 5 to 6 newly established colonies.
PREPARATION OF FUMIDIL B ...
FUMIDIL B is best prepared at a concentration in the range of
from 75 to 100 mg. fumagillin active per gallon of a 2:1 sugar
syrup. The desired concentration is obtained by using one 0.5
gram package for the preparation of 5 to 6 gallons of medicated
syrup, one 2.0 gram package for the preparation of 20 to 24 gallons
of medicated syrup, or one 9.5 gram package for the preparation
of 100 to 120 gallons of medicated syrup. When only one or two
colonies are to be treated, the syrup may be made with a rounder
teaspoonful (3.75 g. to 5 g. of formula) of FUMIDIL B per gallon.
FUMIDIL B will dissolve readily in cold water. Heat is needed
only in order to dissolve the sugar quickly. Therefore, water
should be heated only warm enough to dissolve the sugar. No heat
should be used after the FUMIDIL B has been added. The best results
are obtained when water is heated to between 100 and 120 degrees
F., the heat source is removed and then the FUMIDIL B and sugar
are dissolved, in
that order.
NOTE: 44 pounds of sugar in 22 pounds (2 3/4 gallons) of water
will make roughly 6 gallons of 2:1 sugar syrup. 371 pounds of
sugar in 186 pounds (23 gallons) of water will make roughly 50
gallons of 2:1 sugar syrup.
RESTRICTED DRUG--USE ONLY AS DIRECTED NOT FOR HUMAN USE. STORE
IN A DARK PLACE. AVOID PROLONGED STORAGE ABOVE 86° F.
